Snorkel at Abu Dabbab in Marsa Alam, one of the few places on earth where green turtles and dugongs graze the seagrass in shallow water.
Some things are worth getting up at five in the morning for. The seagrass beds south of Hurghada are home to green turtles and, if the day is kind, dugongs - the gentle sea cows that have all but vanished from the rest of the Red Sea.
The water here is shallow and clear, which means you float above the animals rather than diving down to them. Guides brief every group on how to keep a respectful distance so the bay stays worth visiting.
It is a long day with a substantial coach transfer in each direction, and the wildlife is wild - but few guests come back disappointed.
